Honey and Harvest

2022 was my first successful year keeping bees. I had started a colony the year prior but ended up losing them. This year nearly ended the same way after I lost my queen in August. Thankfully I was able to replace her just in time. I was quite worried that they weren’t going to last the winter as the colony had been reduced to almost nothing. So far, however, they have been surviving quite well, and I am hopeful they will be able to endure the rest of winter.

I have been completely enamored with my bees. They captivate me with their mesmerizing beauty. Much like staring into the glowing embers of a fire, I often sit next to the hive and watch them as they launch out in search of pollen and return victorious with their tiny yellow and orange saddlebags.

With Spring fast approaching, I am planning to start a second hive. With the massive decline in pollinators over the last decade or two, I feel an immense responsibility to do my part to help bring them back. We are the caretakers of this beautiful world, and thus far, we have failed miserably in our duty. In as much as I am able, I will do my part to restore that which has been destroyed.
